For many years, students in the field of health sciences found it hard to access enough information regarding their fields of study. This was because there were hardly enough health books available. Public libraries were not well equipped either and the internet was not even thought of. The students had to cope with the few available resources and this had major effects on their academics. It was not only a problem to the students, their teachers too found it hard to effectively teach without enough reference material. Some were forced to spend dearly in acquiring the books from alternative sources like private libraries.

With the changing times, this trend has changed. Thanks to non-governmental organizations, self help groups, churches and other well wishers, there are enough health books available to health students. Bookstores are packed with overwhelming varieties of books for students to choose from. Public libraries have enough to cater for the population of students in their local towns and health schools have adequate reference books for their learners. As a result, schools can now admit more students as there are enough reference materials to comfortably serve them.

The ease with which the books can be accessed has enabled some students to take distant learning classes. All they need are guidelines from their tutors and they will refer the rest from their books.
Today, health reference materials come in a wide variation of forms. With the rapid growth in technology, the books can be accessed in electronic data format. This means that a student does not have to buy a hard copy of his favorite book. If one has a computer, he can read the electronic book. The Internet has made it even more convenient as the students can now buy eBooks and paperback from their favorite health authors at the click of a mouse.

Why choose alternatives to rock salt when melting ice on sidewalks or drives?

Winter is officially here, it looks like a winter wonderland outside! On a snowy day  we rush out to shovel,  covering our driveways and sidewalks with salt, making them safer to walk on. Unfortunately, rock salt is not particularly good for the plants and trees nearby, the pets who walk on the sidewalk and steps, or the water that flows off the drive. Not to mention we track the residue into our homes on our shoes.

Rock salt is inexpensive, easy to apply and effective but it’s a real environmental threat, killing trees and vegetation, contaminating waterways and groundwater, and poisoning wildlife. Sodium chloride deicers are corrisive and can burn pet’s paws.

What’s worse, once salt gets into an environment, it’s there to stay. It doesn’t evaporate or breakdown–it simply accumulates, compounding the problem.

What are some green alternatives; safer for people, pet’s and the environment?

Read labels, anything with chloride in it should be avoided or used as minimally as possible. Calcium magnesium acetate and potassium acetate is the best choice for a deicer but can be very costly. Spreading kitty litter, sand or ash does not melt ice but will help make a non skid surface and can be brushed into the surrounding plants without causing harm to the veggitation.  Although, these options can be messy, tracking into the home on shoes and pet’s paws.

The best solution is to clear the snow from driveways and walking surfaces before it has a chance to become compacted, or pay someone else to do this. That way, limited salt needs to be used. Also, wear footwear designed for the snow or modify existing shoes with Yaxtrax or Icer’s to walk safely on snowy driveways.

Be kind to pets, wildlife, soil and water and choose a more environmentally-friendly way of deicing this year!

Update

Posted by: Jennifer | Comments (0)

This last year has been great for us here at Little Miss Save the Earth. I know that we have not been too good about keeping things update on the site, but we will blame it on the businesses “honeymoon” period. :) We have had so much to do and so much change it has been a real task figuring out how to balance it all. Fortunately, we are there. Everything is going well, we are moving forward in all of our endeavors and we hope that all our hard work is really making a difference. Be sure to keep an eye out for more info from myself, as well as Kendra (and maybe even a few new voices!) and as always, please feel free to contact us with any questions, concerns or comments!

Thanks!
